Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Reserve Your Spot This Week

AllStar has a current female brown belt who trains regularly with men twice her size and holds her own. Not because she's exceptional β€” because the art works. Leverage and technique beat size and strength when they're taught right.

That's the premise of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: a smaller person can control a larger one through technique. Helio Gracie built the art around it because he was a small man. It works for women for the same reason.

Why women train BJJ at AllStar

Four Reasons That Actually Hold Up

Self-defense

BJJ is the most tested self-defense art for smaller people against larger opponents. It addresses the ground β€” where most real confrontations end up β€” which most self-defense classes never touch.

Fitness

Every class burns 400–700 calories. The core strength, flexibility, and body composition changes that come from regular training are significant. And it never feels like exercise.

Confidence

After six months of rolling with partners who are trying to submit you, pressure stops being scary. That shift carries into every part of life.

Community

BJJ communities are tight. AllStar's is tighter than most. Women who train here find training partners who look out for them, not through them.

What to expect

Starting BJJ as a Woman β€” Month by Month

Day 1

You'll feel lost. You'll tap a lot. You'll leave sore in places you didn't know existed. This is normal and universal β€” every person on the mat has been exactly where you are.

Month 1

The movements start to make sense. You build a few techniques you can rely on. The soreness becomes familiar.

3 months

You notice you're calmer under pressure. Not just on the mat.

6 months

You're a real practitioner. You have a game. You have preferences. You have training partners who make you better.

1 year

Most women who make it a year don't stop. It becomes part of how they identify.

The environment at AllStar

Safe, Structured, and Calibrated

Coach Jamal Patterson sets the culture, and the culture doesn't have an ego problem. New students β€” women especially β€” are paired with experienced training partners who guide rather than test. There's no machismo tolerated on the mat.

Women train in the same classes as men at AllStar. There's no separate women's program because there doesn't need to be β€” the environment makes mixed training feel comfortable from day one. But if you want to ease in slowly, we can accommodate that too.

Got questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to train with men? +
Yes. Partners are paired carefully, especially for beginners. The culture at AllStar is specifically controlled to prevent the macho nonsense that exists at some gyms.
Do I need to be strong or athletic? +
No. That's the whole point of BJJ. The art is built for people who can't overpower their opponent. Fitness builds as you train.
Am I too old to start? +
We have women starting in their 40s and 50s. BJJ rewards technique over athleticism. Age is less of a factor than people assume.
What do I wear? +
Comfortable athletic clothes for your first class. You'll need a gi after the trial β€” about $80–$150 and lasts years.
Free trial? +
Two weeks, unlimited classes. No card required, no contract. Call (908) 341-1131.
