Most kids' martial arts programs teach kids to look like martial artists. AllStar teaches kids to be one.

The difference shows up in sparring. Kids who've been through real BJJ instruction can control a bigger kid. Coach Jamal's kids program — built on Renzo Gracie's curriculum and 15 years of coaching kids in Union — is the real version.

New here? Start with the right age group: Cubs for ages 4–6 or Lions for ages 7–13.

Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for kids

Four Things Other Martial Arts Don't Deliver

It's honest

BJJ has a live testing element built in. You learn a technique, drill it, apply it against a partner who isn't cooperating. Real capability vs. performed capability.

It's safe

BJJ is grappling — no striking. Control positions, escapes, takedowns. Kids tap out when uncomfortable and training resets. Lower injury rate than soccer or basketball.

It transfers

The discipline, focus, and persistence required to learn jiu-jitsu carries into school, relationships, and how kids handle anything hard. Parents see it within 90 days.

Real confidence

Not the participation-trophy kind. The kind that comes from being able to handle a physical confrontation — which means kids who train BJJ almost never have to.

Two programs

Cubs and Lions

Cubs — Ages 4–6

Cubs is AllStar's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program for preschool through kindergarten-aged kids. Classes are 30 minutes, high-energy, and built around the developmental reality of a 4 to 6-year-old.

What Cubs teaches: body awareness, coordination, listening to instruction, and the beginning concepts of BJJ — falling safely, moving on the ground, basic positions. Kids who start in Cubs and roll into Lions at 7 are noticeably ahead.

Lions — Ages 7–13

Lions is AllStar's primary kids BJJ program. Real Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, taught progressively, with a belt system that means something.

  • ✓ Takedowns and stand-up
  • ✓ Ground positions — mount, guard, side control, back control
  • ✓ Submissions — arm locks and chokes, taught safely
  • ✓ Controlled live sparring
  • ✓ Progressive belt system — earned, not given
What parents notice

The First 90 Days

  • Their kid stands differently. More posture. Less looking at the floor. The body language of someone who knows where they stand physically.
  • Their kid handles frustration differently. Tapping out 30 times a week teaches kids that pressure is survivable and failure isn't permanent.
  • Teachers notice. Not just at recess, but in class. How a kid sits, how they pay attention, how they respond to instruction.
  • Other kids notice. The dynamic shifts without a confrontation ever happening. That's bully prevention through competence.

Kids training BJJ at AllStar
"

Our son was shy and anxious in group settings. Three months at AllStar — he stands taller, listens better, and actually wants to come to class. Jamal doesn't just teach jiu-jitsu, he builds confidence.

Both kids train here. The discipline transfers home immediately. Teachers at school have asked what we're doing differently. Jamal's curriculum is legit, and the gym feels safe.

My daughter calls the gym "her place." She's more coordinated, more confident, and loves going to class. The Cubs program is age-appropriate without being watered down.

Real bullying prevention doesn't come from lectures. It comes from kids knowing they can handle themselves. My son walks different. That confidence is the gift.
